The night-shift brief: how to leave an AI agent working

A short template for briefing a resident agent: treat it as a shift, pick cloud or desk, give a repeating job, open only the rooms it needs, and review one artifact in the morning.

You commented SHIFT, so here is the night-shift brief from the carousel.

The main idea is simple:

Chat is a visit. A resident agent stays.

In 2026, some agents live in the cloud and can keep working after the laptop closes. Google described Gemini Spark this way at I/O 2026. Some agents live on the desktop and work in your files. Claude Cowork is the clear example, generally available on macOS and Windows since April 2026.

These are product notes, not a benchmark. The useful skill is the brief.

The five-part night-shift brief

1. Stay

Treat the agent as a shift, not a chat visit. Say that the job continues after you leave, and say when you will come back to review it.

2. House

Pick cloud or desk on purpose.

  • Cloud: the work can continue when the machine is off.
  • Desk: the work sits in the folders and apps already on the computer.

Do not mix both houses in the first workflow.

3. Beat

Give a repeating job and a named output. A single prompt is still a visit.

Name the cadence (daily, weekly, after each meeting) and the file, report, or folder that should exist when you return.

4. Rooms

Open only the apps and folders this job needs. Close the rest.

Sending mail, spending money, publishing, or deleting should wait for you.

5. Review

Ask for one artifact you can check in a minute. If you have to read the whole night, the brief failed.

A good first shift

Start with one boring, repeated loop. A morning inbox brief, a weekly status folder, or a research digest is better than an open-ended “run my work.”

Give the agent the minimum access it needs. Review every result until you understand its common failure patterns.

If the first overnight job is messy, shrink the rooms before you add more hours.
